IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SELLERS

HOW TO GET A GREAT PRICE

BE HONEST
The more detailed description of the dress you give — along with information (and possibly pictures) of any marks or spots on the dress — the more other brides will be willing to trust you.

HAVE GREAT PICTURES

If you know you'll sell your dress in advance, ask your wedding photographer to take lots of pictures of the dress itself, says Dr. Manongdo-Joya. Be sure to include details, different angles, as well as pictures of the dress and price tag, and even your sales receipt.

NEVER accept payment in excess of your asking price.
It almost always is a scam.

NEVER give out any of your personal information We even suggest you open a free email account at Hotmail or Yahoo   for the sole purpose of selling your item.

  1. You can ship to the buyer using COD service with the post office.   When this service is used, the seller ships the gown (via UPS or Canada Post) and the buyer pays UPS or Canada Post when the gown arrives their end.  UPS or Canada Post then in turn forwards the payment to you, the seller..  Learn more about UPS COD shipping.

Red Flags Indicating a Potential Scam:

The buyer doesn't ask any specifics about your dress, doesn't request pictures, and are generally more interested in an immediate purchase than finding out more.

The buyer may use broken English or give the impression that they are a non-native speaker.
They are usually located abroad (Nigeria is especially popular.)

They may play with your emotions by posing as a poor mother, minister, signing off with "God bless", putting their trust in you, etc.  Don't fall for it. They may involve a third-party:  a shipper and/or a client.

It's unfortunate that there are a few bad apples out there spoiling the whole bunch.  Remember, you can always send your emails to The Wedding Trunk and we can help you avoid getting scammed.

Here is some info from one of TWT's customers

THIS IS DEFINITELY A SCAM

Hi there!
I've been getting some interest on the gown, and I've been pleased, although I am concerned about a couple of the people who have contacted me for information. They are pushing for a home address so they can pick the dress up, even though I am nowhere near them. I tell them I can only ship it and yet they press for a home address. They also both say they are from other countries, one saying a cousin was coming to pick up the dress along with other 'wedding supplies'; and the other has stated they have a 'private shipping company' picking it up. Even after offering to ship it to an area with an international airport to avoid the inconvenience and expense of trying to get to northern Manitoba, they continue to insist on my home address (even after emphasizing the fact that we are 3000 kilometers from Montreal). I am a little concerned about their behavior and would like to give you a heads up because I believe they are not what they seem to be.

It is very important to let us know if you sold your gown

Keep your contact information up to date by and letting us know within 15 days if your gown has sold.   We want to keep our site up to date and don't want potential brides to get disappointed and disheartened to find their dream dress only to find out it has been sold.  It's not fair to them and compromises this site.   If we cannot reach you through the contact information you provided, we reserve the right to remove your listing without notice until new contact information is supplied.   (Your listing will be restored as soon as new contact information is available).  Thank you for your help in keeping our site accurate and helpful to future brides!

RETURN POLICY
A clear return policy can reassure buyers.

A buyer is more likely to trust you if you offer to take the dress back at the buyer's expense so consider taking Returns! Research shows that 21% of non-buyers cite “lack of return policy” as the reason they buy elsewhere.  If you have a clear return policy, chances are that you're more successful than other sellers. Research shows that difficulty in returning items is the most common shopping barrier talked about by buyers. As a result, sellers who clearly spell out return policies in their listings have an edge on the competition. Typically they sell a higher percentage of their items. Research has also shown that only a very small percentage of sold items are actually returned.

For example, you might offer that your dress can be returned within 14 days (return shipping at the buyers expense) if the buyer doesn't like it/or it doesn't fit.  Of course, to protect yourself, you should receive the full payment price before you ship the gown, then return the money when the buyer returns the gown.  This policy is only a suggestion and your terms of sale are completely up to you. The buyer can also use the COD method.
